@anthipozhan, i am not a vadakkan. still i prefer the usage of ‘thankal’. Also, i have mentioned it in one of my previous comments (i dont knwo whether you have noticed it or not)that we should be using ‘tharoo’ ‘varoo’ ‘pokoo’ ‘parayoo’ ‘kodukko’ etc. etc. instead of ‘thaa’ ‘vaa’ ‘po’ ‘para’ ‘kodukk’ etc. etc. especially when talking to elders.

The problem is we dont teach our children how to speak respectfully either at schools or at home. Even in our movies, this is the same case. superstar will be asking his mom ‘ivide vaa amme’ instead of ‘ivide varoo amme’, setting a bad example.

I hope atleast a few people who read this coment will understand the mistake in their daily usage of our mothertoungue and amend.

thankal vadakkanaanalle?
njaan thekkanaayathinte kuzhappamaanu ee ‘thaan’ vili.
We use it to address the same aged un-formally. It’s not at all un-respectful here.
(we use ‘thankal’ most often in written language not in colloquial. and it sounds an odd formality.I was in a mood of dialogue and it was a flow there.)
But ‘nee’ is without respect and address lesser aged ones.
Along with ‘thaan’ we may use ‘eTO’ or ‘eTE’(varamozhi-pronunciation) un-formally.
Others may feel odd on all these.

Now I remember, one my Kozhikkodan friend once mentioned this to me.
But I couldn’t help.

Now I try to keep it in mind. Thanks for reminding.
